Pediatric Dental Services in Hamburg, NY & The Southtowns

THE FIRST DENTAL VISIT:

It is recommended the first dental visit closely follow the first birthday by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

Please do not worry how your child will behave for this visit. A toddler is not expected to complete the same tasks an older child would at a check up.

These early visits are important for the child to get comfortable in the office environment and for the caregiver to learn key preventive home care.

PREVENTIVE SERVICES:

Preventive dentistry is the core philosophy essential to a child's good dental health and development.

A routine recall visit that includes periodic exam, prophylaxis/cleaning, and a fluoride treatment is essential every six months.

The office provides x-ray examination with state of the art digital radiography. Digital x-rays utilize a fraction of the radiation that traditional x-ray use. X-ray examination is used to diagnose tooth decay, oral pathology, and growth and development.

We recommend sealant application on all patient's first permanent molars and second permanent molars. A sealant is placed in the deep grooves on the chewing surface of a tooth to seal the microscopic depth to a more brush able level.

Orthodontic space maintainers are fabricated to prevent space loss in the dental arch when a child loses a tooth prematurely due to decay, abscess, or trauma.

INITIAL ORTHODONTIC EVALUATION:

Every child's dental development is evaluated at every routine recall visit.

More specifically, at 7-8 years of age, with the eruption of permanent front teeth, the bite is evaluated to consider referral to an orthodontist.

There are some instances of dental development, such as severe crowding, under bite, or overbite, where early referral to the orthodontist for evaluation is indicated. Early referral occurs when the child has a mixed dentition or a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth.

The goal of early orthodontic treatment is to guide growth as the permanent dentition erupts. Early treatment is not usually an alternative to braces when all the permanent teeth grow in. It often makes the treatment time in full braces shorter.

SPECIAL CHILD DENTAL CARE:

Every child has their own barometer to function and adapt in the dental environment. A child with special needs is no different. It is our goal for every child's visit to our office that they are comfortable and we are aware of their specific abilities and needs.

Dr. Casey and her staff have experience caring for children with cleft palate formation, cerebral palsy, Down's syndrome, autism, and many other developmental and behavioral diagnoses. It is our hope that a parent never delays establishing their child's dental home with us because they are worried about their child will behave. We can take care of your special child.
